This Rotary project will provide repayable business loans, starting as low as $50, to impoverished indigenous Lenca women in Honduras’ rural highlands, so they can start or expand a small business and begin to lift themselves and their families out of extreme poverty. The money would be used fully and exclusively to fund business loans, which, when repaid will go back into circulation to fund more loans. In this way, this one-time Rotary funding will be recycled for years and touch and transform many lives. The Rotary loans will be administered by the Adelante Foundation, a highly-regarded, US-based nonprofit organization with ten years of microfinance experience in Honduras, including four years working with the Lenca people of Intibuca. It is hoped that the Rotary funding will be instrumental in helping Adelante to become fully self-sustaining. The project will be co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of Poway, California, and a sister Rotary Club in Marcala, Honduras.
